5 Steps for Successfully Re-Entering the Workplace
5 Steps for Successfully Re-Entering the Workplace5 Steps for Successfully Re-Entering the Workplace5 Steps for Successfully Re-Entering the WorkplaceNervous about re-entering the workforce? There are things you can do to set yourself up for success. TWEETFor many women, having a family means taking a break from working outside the house. According to a study done by Pew Research Center, 29% of all mothers did not work outside the home in 2012 an increase over 23% in 1997. There are many reasons that explain the trend slow economy and the rising cost of childcare are just two of the factors. As children grow and some moms begin to contemplate returning to the professional workforce, they face unique challenges in their job search. How do you demonstrate you are relevant after being out of the job market for two (or 10) years? Will your career gap discourage prospective employers from considering you? Is being a mom a resume killer in todays competitive job market?Far from it. There a re things you can do to set yourself up for a successful career re-launch. The key to success is understanding what your prospective employers concerns might be, and structuring your resume and interview responses in a strategic way that will put those concerns to rest.I do not believe that there is a conspiracy to keep moms from returning to the workplace. Hiring managers just want their job openings filled with the best candidates. They might have legitimate hesitations when it comes to considering a candidate who has been out of the workforce for a number of years. Here is a short list of their concerns as they look at your application and notice your gap in work historyYou may not be up-to-date on your skills,You may not have kept up on the relevant trends and issues in the industry,You may have difficulty balancing responsibilities at home and outside work. From a hiring managers perspective, the costs of hiring and training a new employee are high. He or she doesnt want to make an expensive mistake, and may be inclined to choose a less risky candidate (one with no employment gaps and recent work history). In my experience, it serves you best to address the issue proactively. Here are some steps you might consider.1. Camouflage that career gapConsider using a skills-based resume layout as opposed to a chronological one. It can highlight your transferable skills that line up with the job requirements, and take attention away from the employment gap.I do not recommend putting housekeeping or parenting skills on your resume (or discussing them in an interview) not because I dont believe they are valuable, but because in most cases they are not directly related to the job you are pursuing.Instead, focus on highlighting any relevant experience you may have gained. Did you run a library fundraiser for your childs school? That took business development, people management, and budget skills. It can also show that you have the ability to focus and the discipline to see a demanding project through to completion.Consider freelancing, contract work, or volunteering in a related field. Those entries in your career history will confirm that you are serious about returning to work, and have a history of successfully balancing the additional responsibilities with being a parent.2. Stay current on industry trendsThe pace of change around us is staggering. That statement is as true about technology as it is about industry trends. In order to stay relevant and up-to-date, consider joining professional association groups, and make a habit of reviewing industry publications. The time invested into nurturing these connections to the working world can be as little as 3-5 hours per month, and it pays off. Professional groups offer great opportunities for networking, and can give you a chance to practice your pitch and interview skills before you hit the recruiting circuit. 3. Keep your professional skills sharpTechnology changes quickly, and professional mu scles go stiff without practice. Look at the skills prospective employers are requiring as a baseline for the openings you would be interested in, and be strategic about highlighting what you have, and acquiring what you are missing. You have many options, from taking a class for a specific skill-set or technology platform to volunteering.4. Be strategic about where your lookIf we take judgment and our opinion of the way the world should be out of the picture, some employers simply want to hire and retain mothers mora than others. Strategically, your time is better spent targeting companies where you will be viewed as a valuable addition - not those where you will have to apologize for the time spent raising kids.5. Dig deep and tap into your confidenceEven though this point comes last, it is critically important. Being out of the workforce for several years can make you feel that you are not as qualified as the next candidate. Hiring managers will read that lack of confidence in yo ur cover letter, handshake, or your tone. The best way to combat that is personal clarity on why you are returning to work, and on the value that you will add. This is not about you, but about how you can be of service to your prospective employer. In closing, remember that you do not have to do this alone. There are great resources, online and offline, for moms re-entering the workforce who are concerned about a gap in work history. Here is a short list to get you started. Some of these have a membership fee, while others are free.Womenwork is a company dedicated to keeping women at work through all ages and stages. This website has a curated list of resources for working women, and offers additional benefits for a membership fee. iRelaunch is an online resource with advice for those returning to work.studentencorpsteam and Mom Corps is a national staffing and search company focusing exclusively on the placement of experienced professionals in fractional, flexible and virtual positi ons.The Glass Hammer is a professional career resource for women.Ellevate network offers online resources for professional women for a membership fee, and can work particularly well if there is a local chapter near you.Consider reconnecting with old mentors, co-workers, or bosses. They can be a valuable source of insight and advice.Let TopResume help you write the next chapter of your career. Heres how.

Heres how to give criticism that will be accepted
Heres how to give criticism that will be acceptedHeres how to give criticism that will be acceptedHow can I give criticism that will be accepted? For most of my life, I was taught to deliver feedback the WRONG way- where the criticism was sandwiched between two compliments to soften the blow. But within the belastung year, I learned a simple, GENIUS approach that gets the point clearly across, while still building rapport with the person. This has allowed me to more openly and readily critique ideas and behaviors without ruffling feathers. When I began my career, giving criticism was something that gave me major anxiety, and I was so focused on not hurting anyones feelings that my main critique was often lost among platitudes (you can watch what I mean here).I would give a feedback sandwich where I would compliment someone, sneak the criticism in quickly, and then compliment them again. In all my concern and anxiety, it ended up sounding inauthentic when I forced praise, and it buried the core message that I set out to deliver.I didnt have the best role models either. I saw many executives who were brash, going straight for the jugular with criticism. Receiving feedback from them left many employees feeling attacked or that their hard work was disregarded. Then a mentor taught me the recipe for critical feedback1. Start with empathy.Show some appreciation, relate to them in some way. Such asI can tell you really care about this I know that you put many hours into this and I appreciate it I can see this isnt your favorite type of work, but you gave it your best effort Ive noticed the past few weeks have been tough for you 2. Then deliver the specific criticism.Be specific about the behaviors that are unsavory instead of labeling the person or remarking on their character.Such as instead of saying, You seem checked out, name the behaviors, such as, You rarely speak up in meetings anymore and have been late to work several times in the last 2 weeks.Avoid using ab solute language like always and never, this gets people defensive.Such as, instead of saying, You never remember to include me on emails, say, Ive been frequently left off of communications you have with the client. This method establishes common ground first, attempts to empathize with the person, and then delivers direct, unmistakable criticism that the person can hopefully learn from. Below is an example of transforming feedback, before and after, to this more effective format. Its a mix of being caring with tough love that ultimately helps you build a stronger relationship with them. This article first appeared on Quora.

Recruiters visit campuses nationwide to interview candidates, and hundreds of them are hired in an average year.Graduates who are concerned with the prospect of spending decades repaying their loans may want to consider this perk of federal employment access to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, which can cancel the balance owed on student loans after the first 120 payments are made. This can be a big help to federal employees when it comes time to buy a house, start a family or save for retirement, for example.Students and recent graduates should be aware that the resume for a federal job is not in the format typically taught by college career-development offices. How to Develop Professionally in Companies Without Formal Programs
How to Develop Professionally in Companies Without Formal Programs Regardless of whether or not an employer provides a formal employee development program, every individual is responsible for their professional advancement. Your organization might not have the budget to send you to conferences or pay for certification tests, but that does not mean you can afford to ignore development altogether. Here are a few tips to help you advance your skills and career, even when you dont have access to formal training programs.Make a PlanIf youre taking professional development into your own hands, you must have a plan. Start by creating a road map as if you were required to fulfill a development plan. In addition to goals, checkpoints, and action items, your plan should include buy-in from your anfhrer, if possible.Once youve created a plan, make sure to hold yourself accountable It can be easy to dismiss deadlines if you dont have a supervisor looking over your shoulder, but completing your development goals on time will keep you focused on advancement. If you need some help staying accountable, share your plan with others. Youll be more likely to stick to your career road map if your boss and/or coworkers know youve set a deadline for yourself.Ask for Stretch AssignmentsIf youve received support from your boss concerning your professional development plan, request challenging assignments that are outside of your comfort zone and normal duties. Taking on new projects shows your initiative and willingness to learn, which are attributes companies look for in their team members.Stretch goals are not something to be afraid of. These assignments will be difficult and will challenge you professionally, but not succeeding on a stretch assignment the first time does not mean that you have failed. Instead, itmeans that you have learned the skills you need to develop in order to succeed the next time around.Identify a beraterA good way to figure ou t where you want to go in your career is to identify a person in a similar role who is doing what you want to do, is respected in a way you want to be respected, or holds a position you want to have in the next few years. Once you find that person, you have two options study them so that you can learn from their habits and interactions, or try to establish a mentor relationship with them. What youll likely find is that your mentor (or role model) not only excels at their own job but also fully understands how their job relates to other jobs within the company. When you know the ripple effects of your job, it helps you make better choices. Understanding how your work impacts others will make you more mindful of other peoples time and responsibilities.Join a Professional OrganizationAnother way to refine your skills is to join a professional organization within your field. Such organizations are helpful because they often provide training components that you might not be able to find a t your current company. If you feel underqualified for a training session, go anyway. Attending developmental sessions that you think are slightly above your knowledge level is beneficial. One of the biggest blind spots for young professionals is that they dont know what they dont even know By joining a professional organization, you will learn things that you might not come across in your current role but will prove helpful in the future.Creating your own professional development plan in a company without formal development opportunitiescan be daunting. However, if you want to impress decision-makers at your company and propel your career forward, self-improvement beyond your daily tasks is necessary. If you start with a plan, find a mentor, ask for challenging projects, and join a professional organization, youll collect new skills that will be beneficial to your career in both the near and far futuresMeghann Isgan is the team success manager at Readers.com.

During the Holidays, Incorporate Work and Family Instead of Balancing Them
During the Holidays, Incorporate Work and Family Instead of Balancing Them During the Holidays, Incorporate Work and Family Instead of Balancing Them How exactly does one incorporate the pair together successfully and pressure-free? These are my tried and true tips for incorporating the workplace with kids verging on the cusp of their tweenage years and beyond.1) Take Em to the OfficeIf you work in a particularly festive and merry work environment, this is a great way for your kids to engage in the activities offered while avoiding any feelings of potential boredom that could creep in. Assuming that you have your own space, let your kids work on homework or assign them smaller craft projects to keep them busy and quiet and make sure they know to be respectful of other members of the office working as well. Giving your kids little projects to work on rather than allowing them to play around online for eight hours straight helps teach them the importance of hard work and diligence. Plus, theyre probably very proud to see their mom working hard and taking action with her great career2) Enroll in a Winter CampIf you take several meetings out of the office during the day or have to travel for your job, its not always feasible to take the kids with you to work every single day. Look into finding some great camps for kids instead, especially winter camps. They dont have to be enrolled in camp every day, but a few days a week for winter break will add some much needed activity and excitement to their typical routines and allow for interaction with their own age groups. And speaking of that, find a few of their friends to go along with them and make it a party3) Stay OrganizedWhen youre not organized, things can snowball away from you (no pun intended) pretty fast. Im a huge fan of lists and planning and like to keep organized as much as possible to keep the entire family and all of my work responsibilities in check. It always feels good to check off the tasks on you r list without needing to check them twice like Santa (okay, pun definitely intended this time)4) BreatheMerging your work life with your children, like every work/life balance, is sure to have plenty of stressful moments ahead, particularly during the holidays when the parties, events, and family gatherings are in full swing. Stop and take deep breaths often. By keeping calm, youre a lot more likely to accomplish your goals than if you act crazy or harried. Take the time to count your blessings as well. Recognize all of the good things you have and be grateful for those things instead of losing sight in whats important. Tis the season, after all

How To Provide a Good Reference
How To Provide a Good ReferenceHow To Provide a Good ReferenceAgreeing to serve as a reference for a current or former colleague is a big responsibility, and you want to make sure you do it right. A references confirmation that the applicant is an upstanding professional is an important part of the hiring process. So think it through carefully. You are being asked to fill an important role. If you conclude that you can endorse the candidate, then you are ready to move to step two in your preparation. But if you feel like you have mora negatives than positives to say about the candidate, or if you have information about him/zu sich that you see as a hiring deal-breaker, dont agree to do this. As awkward as it may seem, it is better to turn down the request to be a referencethan to provide negative feedback to a potential employer. If you decide to move forward and serve as a reference, heres how you get started. Preparation If you havent been a reference before, dont worry. This wont be a difficult conversation. But it will go smoother if you think about it ahead of time. You want to make sure that your feedback is well-prepared, relevant and honest. Preparation is key. Sometimes these phone calls can take you by surprise. To do this well, you need to be ready when that moment comes, so jot down some notes as you think through what you plan to say. It helps because you might find yourself a bit nervous the first couple of times you serve in this capacity. Some Common QuestionsTo get your wheels turning, think about what you would need to know about this candidate if you were on the hiring side. Also, consider these questions, as they are often posed to references How long did you work with the candidate and how were your positions related? Why did the candidate leave his/her position? What are the candidates strengths and areas of challenge? How have you seen the candidate grow as a professional? What was it like to be on his/her team? Do you have suggestions fo r how I can keep this candidate engaged or fulfilled in his/her position?Use Examples Think of concrete examples to back up claims you make. Examples universalize professional experiences across industries. So you may have worked with the candidate at a completely different job than the one for which he or she is currently interviewing, but if you can tell a story that illustrates why she is detail-oriented or excellent at customer service, its totally relevant. Hiring is difficult, and those who do it are eager to be assured that their gut instincts are accurate. Examples help with this. Its good on your side, too. This way it feel less evaluative, less like judgement and more like observation. Examples are especially helpful when discussing areas for growth. If you are serving as a reference for someone, you are likely rooting for him/her, and you sincerely endorse him/her for the position despite his/her areas of challenge. So think of a good growth storyan anecdote that shows ho w the candidate has evolved professionally. This will put a positive spin on that difficult question in a sincere and honest way. With some thought and preparation, you will be ready to assume this important role with conviction and confidence.
